UV-visible / near-IR spectroscopy is an important technique to quantify the colours of molecules and materials, to study reaction mechanisms, and to quantify binding and aggregation in solution. The proposed UV-vis / near-IR spectrometer will be used for variable-temperature studies of diverse compounds and materials in solution and as thin films. Examples of research to be supported include supramolecules for sensing analytes in solution, photonic sensors based on iridescent cellulose nanocrystal films, macrocycle-metal complexes, photoactive molecules for solar energy harvesting, and photoactive polymers for killing viruses and bacteria. The instrument will be used by a diverse set of undergraduate students, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and will support the research activities of many trainees in multiple research groups. It will provide valuable hands-on training, which is essential for researchers in organic and inorganic chemistry.
