The fields of official statistics and survey methodology have seen drastic evolutions during the past decade. Official statistical agencies such as Statistics Canada have been moving beyond the traditional survey-first approach to new methods integrating data from a variety of existing sources. While some of the old issues remain, the evolutions bring new challenges to all major phases in official statistics and survey methodology research, including data collection, production, access, and statistical analysis. The proposed research addresses three critical components of new challenges and emerging issues: (1) the creation of public-use data files to facilitate valid scientific investigations without compromising privacy and confidentiality; (2) the development of statistical methods for analyzing excessively large and/or real-time data files; and (3) the advancement of methodologies for dealing with biased and non-probability survey samples and data from unconventional sources. The proposal is built based partially on the applicant's recent successfully completed research projects on related topics and answers the call from official statistical agencies, data users, decision makers and survey practitioners to tackle important emerging problems in the new data era.
