Klebsiella pneumoniae is a bacterial pathogen that can cause serious infections in both humans and dairy cattle. It is becoming increasingly untreatable in both humans and cattle due to the rise in antimicrobial resistant strains. Very little is known about the relationships between the K. pneumoniae strains that cause human infections and the strains that cause infections in dairy cows. It is unclear if there is significant transmission back and fourth between humans and cows, or if completely distinct lineages of K. pneumoniae are responsible for infections in humans and cows. This study will whole genome sequence a variety of bovine and human isolates from both Canada and Ireland and determine how related the isolates causing illness in humans and cows are in both countries. The knowledge generated by this study will help to develop management practices as well as non-antibiotic therapeutics and prophylactics to prevent treat and prevent K. pneumoniae infections in dairy cattle. It will also be usedto inform useful public policy and biosecurity measures aimed at reducing zoonotic and reverse-zoonotic transfer of this important pathogen.
