The Egba Revolt: recovering the Egba women's strategies, stories and songs

Despite Nigerian women's long history of resistance, their contributions to feminist organising continueto be erased. By centring the stories of elderly Egba women who won't live much longer, this project willadvance our understanding of anti-colonial feminist politics in Nigeria.This project will also examine the hidden knowledge stored in protest songs, grassroots demonstrationsand archives centred on the Egba Revolt. What role did sites of knowledge production like protests andmarkets play in fostering solidarity? How and why were embodied acts such as protesting and singinguseful for transmitting knowledge? What happened to the Egba women after overthrowing colonialtaxation? By engaging with existing research (Byfield, 2003) on the impact of colonial taxation in Egbaand by placing archives in dialogue with embodied repertoires of memory (Taylor, 2003), this project willcontribute to the field of African feminism.My research project aims to map the lineages of the Egba Women's revolt rooted in abolition. Byinvestigating the Egba women's strategies, this research will document the innovative ways Egba womenimplemented their dream for collective liberation. In light of global movements like #endsars and#blacklivesmatter, researchers are paying more attention to abolitionist frameworks influenced byradical black tradition and indigenous feminist organising. Hence, this research will serve as a 'fertileground for the production of liberatory feminist theory' (hooks, 1994: 70).This project will pioneer new research that centers the political agency of Nigerian feminist grandmotherswhich has received little recognition or theorisation. Influenced by Bakare-Yusuf's standpoint that Africanwomen's lives intersect with 'a plurality of power formations and historical encounters' (Bakare-Yusuf,2003: 1), I will utilise narrative research methods such as oral history interviews to obtain rich stories(Nadar, 2014), which will be used to contest the erasure of Nigeria feminists' powerful voices andhistories. In a time where Black women's stories are routinely silenced, this research will educateaudiences' about the creative ways Black women organise and resist.African feminist knowledge will be produced and documented through the showing of an interactive full-length play, poetry performances and a touring exhibition of the Egba Revolt. Asiri Magazine, a Nigerianrepository of archival material, has agreed to be involved in future collaborations to amplify the creativeoutputs' reach. Since archiving is a political act, such creative outputs will be integral for building moreinclusive records of and futures for forgotten but significant histories like this revolt.
