This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of the study is to determine the capacity of a DNA-hsp65 vaccine to elicit an immune response against the bacterium that causes TB. Rhesus monkeys will receive only a candidate vaccine against mycobacterial (tuberculosis) infection. They will not be challenged with M tuberculosis. We expect that the vaccinated groups will demonstrate a protective immune response mainly mediated by cells in the blood and by cytokines (small proteins that regulate communication among immune system cells).
