英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of bioelectrical impedance (BIA) as a measure of body composition in 40 adolescents (age 13-21) with Down Syndrome (DS). BIA will be compared with dual energy x-ray absortiometry (DEXA). The data will also inform us about the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fatness when considering BMI cut off points in children with DS. BIA has been validated as a way to measure body fatness in typically developing population, but not in children and adolescents with Down Syndrome. In this study, we will conduct DEXA to validate BIA as an accurate measure of body fatness in adolescents and young adults with DS.
