As a newly recruited assistant professor at the University of Ottawa, I am establishing a research program directed towards the development of novel synthetic methods in the isolation of inorganic nano-magnetic materials. The synthesis and study of such complexes will lead to faster and lower-power electronics and higher density data storage. This is an important and innovative research area awaiting exploration. Research will primarily focus on the isolation and study of two types of nano-materials, being single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and single chain magnets (SCMs). Such molecules exhibit superparamagnet-like slow magnetization relaxation and straddle the classical/quantum interface in also displaying quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). In order to synthesize new SMMs an unexplored strategy that combines actinides/lanthanides with transition metal ions in the presence of the bridging ligands cyanide, azide and other nitrogen based ligands in inert conditions will be employed. This approach may be the way forward to a higher blocking temperature SMM. A controlled mixed metal actinide/lantanide and transition metal building block approach will be utilized for the preparation of SCMs in which magnetic units of varying size will firstly be designed and isolated. These units will subsequently be linked using linear linkers such as cyanide, azide and oxalate into 1-D infinite SCMs. This research will provide a new direction and much knowledge to the very young and uncharted field of SCMs. The proposed program represents a unique approach to the ultimate understanding and application of nano-magnetic materials and will perhaps provide the way forward to the commercial application of such molecules. As this research requires the use of inert atmospheric conditions for syntheses on a daily basis the acquisition of a controlled atmosphere glove box setup is urgent. This setup is not available for actinide chemistry at the University of Ottawa and due to their chemical properties these complexes cannot be synthesized in any other conditions. Hence, in order to commence and then successfully develop this research program to generate cutting edge results NSERC funding is imperative.
