This proposal describes research involving the design of a new miniature, low power wireless integrated sensor platform for acquisition and control (WISe-PAC) that can be used to help monitor and communicate human vital signs. WISe-PAC will be used to create a biomedical device that can securely transmit patient temperature data to a medical monitoring network. It is intended that the device can ultimately be used in both hospital and home settings. The research will be carried out by a Canada wide multidisciplinary team of researchers, located at the Universities of Calgary, McGill, and Carleton. The work will also involve collaborations with medical researchers at the University of Calgary and the Calgary Health Region, and our industry partner Associated Health Systems. The work will be tested in the new "Medical Ward of the 21st Century" at the Foothills hospital. The research team will include prominent researchers with expertise in microelectronic integrated circuits, MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS), biomedical sensors, radio frequency integrated circuits for wireless communications, communication networks, and antenna design, and involve medical practitioners. The novelty of the proposed research is in: 1) the design of the biomedical sensors 2) the design of the wireless circuits that will permit users to remotely monitor and control these devices, 3) the ultra low power circuit designs that will be developed to scavenge energy from the environment, and that are resistant to interference, and 4) the integration of all components into a low cost device. The research is expected to subsequently lead to the development of an integrated framework of biomedical sensors for monitoring patient vital signs. The main targets of the research are to develop integrated biomedical systems that enhance patient safety in both the hospital and home settings, and reduce medical staff workloads. The commercial opportunities for Canadian companies to market such devices and systems world-wide are excellent.
