BACKGROUND: Early detection of cancer is one of the primary requirements of its successful treatment. Elastography, which images tissue stiffness, has recently emerged as a promising diagnostic tool for this purpose. In ultrasound elastography the tissue is compressed and tissue deformation is measured using conventional ultrasound machines to construct elastography images. To exploit the potentials of ultrasound elastography, it is necessary to acquire an imaging system with open access to its raw deformation data.
