FTIR spectroscopy is often used with other methods to conclusively identify species; it is information rich and provides invaluable data about bonding and structure and is a crucial part of material characterization for all sub-disciplines of chemistry. FTIR analysis is particularly crucial when evaluating materials such as insoluble polymers, ceramics, surfaces, semiconductor quantum dots, and metal nanoparticles - it is one of the only methods that allows for evaluation of chemical functionality in these systems. This proposal requested funds to replace an aging, general use Nicolet Magna 750 spectrometer that is no longer supported by the vendor and whose catastrophic failure is imminent.
