Development of natural fiber-based wraps for pulp baling and packaging strapping

This project is to collaborate with OVAL International to develop cost-effective and renewable natural fiber-based wraps for pulp baling and carton box strapping. The proposed research falls into the general area of maximizing the value of Canadian natural resources. The developed products will not only replace the plastic and metal wraps/straps which are often used, but are also more cost-effective than the existing products, which are very expensive. The new products are environmentally friendly because they are based on natural products, such as fibers, and nano-crystalline cellulose. World demand for green packaging, including recycled-content, reusable, and degradable packaging, is high. This is because companies, including pulp and paper manufacturers, equipment suppliers/ and their associated industries are seeking opportunities to demonstrate environmental responsibility and differentiate their products by using green packaging materials.
