The established environmental and health impacts of internal combustion engines has prompted the development of several engine operating and fuelling strategies aimed at reducing the reliance on imported fuels, fuel consumption, and the emission of toxic substances. Included in these are advanced diesel injection strategies and the effective use of the significant North American natural gas reserves through dual-fuel combustion modes. While these technologies hold significant promise, a fundamental understanding of the underlying combustion and emission formation processes is still needed. This work will consider these processes using an optically accessible engine, develop and evaluate a novel thermo-optical diagnostic technique to provide higher fidelity combustion characterization in real (i.e. non-optical) engines, and develop numerical tools describing the combustion and emission formation process. All of these outcomes will provide the Canadian automotive industry the knowledge and tools to develop advanced internal combustion engines. Furthermore, it will help strengthen Canada's international leadership in the development of technologies for natural gas fuelled engines. In addition to these technical contributions, this research will train 4-6 highly qualified personnel, providing them with valuable skills in engine development, combustion and emissions, and associated diagnostic techniques, further strengthening Canada's workforce in these fields.
