Foot orthotics can reduce walking-related injuries, realign the skeletal mechanics, improve comfort and relieve osteoarthritic knee pain. However, not much is known about how orthotic interventions influence the lower limb muscle during walking. In particular, an orthotic intervention is likely to influence the function of the intrinsic foot muscles during walking and running: this has not been investigated primarily due to challenging measurement techniques but it is these intrinsic foot muscles that interact directly with the orthotics. This project will combine a novel approach to non-invasively quantify the activity from the intrinsic foot muscles and to measure the response of these muscles to different orthotic designs. The project will involve the collaboration of Wiivv, a Vancouver-based company that leverages innovative approach to deliver custom orthotics and footwear direct to customers, with the Neuromuscular Mechanics Laboratory at Simon Fraser University that has pioneered a range of approaches for quantifying activity from the muscles during locomotion.****This project will provide a stepping-stone towards the development of an innovative technique that can help optimise the design of novel products by a Canadian company that has the potential to improve the quality of life for Canadians. In addition, the fundamental knowledge gained from insights into the function of the foot muscles will improve the scientific community's understanding of the importance of muscle function on the structural and functional biomechanics during movement.**
