Greenhouse ecosystems contain a variety of pests that pose a significant risk to the marketability of the resulting product and cause significant economic loss. Current methods for identifying these pests fall short in autonomously and accurately detecting them before damage becomes visible and intervention becomes impractical. Addressing this concern is imperative as greenhouse agriculture is a significant element of the Canadian economy. Innovations in portable electronic nose and micromachined sensors are revolutionizing the field of health and agriculture by extending the capabilities of diagnosing tools and monitoring devices beyond human senses and perceptions. The adoption of our proposed solution and developed novel electronic nose technology will facilitate the technology transfer of urgently needed miniaturized, high-efficiency, high performance, and cost-effective smart sensor system, developed as a competitive production system for autonomous early detection of target pests at the application level. A market study will be conducted to assess the viability of commercializing a new chemical technology that will allow for the simple and fast detection of pests in the greenhouse sector. This solution is built upon patented technologies that have been combined into a prototype that is already installed in a commercial greenhouse to remotely monitor the environment. Further R&D studies are being explored to improve this sensor. Scale-up production experiments are also needed to support market entry. We expect that the assessment will confirm that there is a commercial interest in this technology and will identify factors affecting adoption, key stakeholders and commercialization partners, and the need for new approaches to improve growing of food that feeds millions of people in Canada and around the world.
