In 2020 there were 1,144 breweries in Canada with total net revenue of $2.2 billion. Since the 1980's the craft brewing industry has grown to 24% of all beer made in Canada. Of importance for the growing industry is developing a systematic way to increase quality assurance and consistency in the products sold to the public. This challenge includes several factors: a crowded marketplace leading some to believe the industry is at saturation, pandemic lockdowns where sales shrank rapidly, and meeting new consumption and distribution needs. As markets rebound, competitiveness has increased, and now is the time to set innovative craft brewers apart, and capture lost and new market share by showing consumers that craft products can be trusted for quality and consistency. The project includes four leading colleges in educational and research services to the craft beer sector with tackling the challenge of improving quality control in craft breweries. It will result in a Craft Brewer Quality Program piloted across the country, will train brewers and students, and demonstrate success through implementation.
