0508419WangThis proposal was received in response to Nanoscale Science and Engineering initiative, NSF 04-043, category NER.This research would result in the development of systems that couple cellular processes to nanoelectronic devices. The overall goal is to enhance understanding of brain dynamics and to use this research to design biosensors and other biomedical devices. Cell membranes will be connected to semiconductors and nanostructures. Retina cells will be cultured in a 3D gel matrix. The matrix material will contain nanoparticles, such as conjugate polyelectrolytes, nanorods and nanowires. Polyelectrolytes will solidify in the gel matrix and immobilize the neuron cells. The retina cells will be tested for activity by using the conjugated electrolytes, which serve as voltage-sensitive fluorescent dyes. The PI will use expertise developed in the growth of nanowire arrays to produce the nanowire gel matrices. Such structures are designed to serve as models for future artificial retina. Nanotubes will be used to produce matrices capable of ionic transport for enhanced electronic properties.
