This award supports a workshop to foster discussion of multi-disciplinary fieldwork in remote sections of the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) of Antarctica. The TAM contain numerous regions of great scientific importance, such as the dinosaur fossil site near Beardmore glacier. While most previous work has been in geology, there are significant opportunities for glaciology, biology, and meteorology. With the International Polar Year occurring from March 2007 to March 2009, this workshop comes at the ideal time to promote synergies among these disciplines. Another key broader impact of this workshop is fostering collaboration between experienced Antarctic researchers and scientists new to Antarctic research. In addition, it is both expensive and resource intensive to perform fieldwork in areas of the TAM south of McMurdo Station, and advance planning like this will help both the community and the USAP make the most cost-effective use of resources.The workshop will be held at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University in September 2006.
