This "Communicating Research to Public Audience" project will produce a broadcast quality television program entitled "Indonesian Origins: Genes, Languages and Culture", using high definition video and 16 mm film shot by the principal investigator beginning in 1981. The project is based on the PI's current NSF HSD grant, "Austronesian Societies: Reading Social Structure from the Genome"(BCS-0432262). The television program will showcase an interdisciplinary approach to the history of the peopling of the Indonesian archipelago, combining genetics, archaeology, historical linguistics and ethnography. The primary intended audience is American viewers of scientific documentary television programs. Potential secondary audiences include world television; classroom use in secondary schools and colleges, and use of short clips in various venues at San Francisco's Exploratorium.
