In this project, photocurrent dynamics shall be experimentally explored in nanoscale circuits, which result from the specific band structure of topological insulators. An important emphasis will be put on the polarization control and electronic read-out of Dirac-Fermions in topological insulators. In particular, one-dimensional helical states shall be examined, and a fundamental understanding of their macroscopic quantum transport shall be achieved. Moreover, ultrafast non-equilibrium photogalvanic currents shall be examined in nanowires in a time-resolved way, which are made of topological insulators. In addition, circuits from topological insulators shall be realized and explored, which have a lateral extension of just a few nanometers. The project aims at exploring new materials and concepts for integrating topological insulators into future optoelectronic circuits and detectors.
