先行研究では、文字で提示された言語について、第一言語の語の処理の初期段階では音の処理が優先され、その後に綴りの照合が行われて同音異義語の候補が除外される（検証処理）と考えられている。2022年度は、こうした先行研究の報告に基づき、文字で書かれた第二言語としての英語の語を処理するうえで、どの段階で日本語の音韻の影響による誤認識を修正するのか、するとしたら処理のどの段階で起こっているのかを検証する実験を行った。具体的には、日本語母語話者にlockという語を２通りの極めて短い時間（120ms, 500ms）提示した後に、rockの類義語であるstoneという語を見せてそれが実在語かどうかを判断させたところ、事前にlockという語を500ms見せた場合の方がその判断が早くなった。これは、処理の初期段階ではまだ検証処理に至っていないため、lockという語を120ms提示したときのみ、日本語母語話者はlockを日本語で同音となるrock（どちらも「ロック」）と誤認し、あたかもlockとstoneが類義語であるかのように反応してしまうはずだという予測とは反対の結果となった。これにより、第二言語における視覚的な語処理では、第一言語よりも検証処理に時間がかかっている可能性をはじめ、第一言語での処理との差異が示唆された。この実験結果は、黙読であっても第一言語の音の影響を受け、第二言語の文字情報を誤って認識してしまう可能性があるということを示している。この知見は、第二言語の発音や聴解だけでなく黙読時においても、混同しやすい音を含む語に注意を向けさせる教育方法を取り入れるなど、第二言語としての英語教育においても活用することができるという考察とともにKJEE (Komaba Journal of English Education)14巻に掲載された。
