本研究計画においては、我が国の人口減少と高齢化が労働市場に与える影響を分析することを目標としている。その中で、育児休業制度や保育所の整備といった家族政策が女性の働き方に対して与えた影響を分析した。とりわけ、家族政策が形成されたスキルの利用に与える影響に着目して分析を行った。女性のスキルが高くても有効に活用されないのならば、労働市場における男女差は解消しないと考えられるためだ。このような問題意識のもと、OECDが作成しているPIAACと呼ばれる調査を分析した。この調査は成人が持つスキルとともにスキルの利用についても明らかにできる点がユニークだ。例えば、読解力について、国語の試験問題を解かせることで明らかにする一方で、読解力を仕事でどの程度使っているかを、メールを書く頻度、新聞を読む頻度、専門雑誌を読む頻度などを聞くことで明らかにしている。これらの質問項目から読解力と読解力利用の指標を計算し、さらにその男女差を国別に計算した。分析の結果、読解力の男女差は各国においてそれほど大きくないものの、読解力利用の男女差は国の間の差異が大きいことが明らかになった。読解力利用の国際的な差異を説明するため、育児休業の期間や所得代替率の大きさで説明をしたところ、充実した育児休業政策を持つ国々では読解力利用の男女差が大きいことが明らかになった。これは、充実した育児休業政策が女性に長期の育児休業を取ることを促し、そのことが男女のキャリア差を生み出すためだと考えられる。税制の差やジェンダー規範の国際的な違いを制御しても、育児休業の効果は変わらず、得られた結果は頑健な結果であるといえる。この論文はLabour Economics誌に査読を経て掲載された。このほかにドイツの行政データを用いた所得格差の分析も行った。
