The proposal deals with the development of synthesis procedures for the creation of novel graphene-based materials with well-defined crystal structure and intriguing electronic and magnetic properties. The project is focused on the comprehensive characterization of the respective crystallographic (by means of scanning tunnel microscopy (STM), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), photoelectron diffraction) and electronic structure (by means of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and near-eadge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS)). This includes the following tasks: i) Elaboration of synthesis conditions for the formation of commensurate graphene layers on Ni and Co substrates and study of structural phase transitions at the interface. ii) Synthesis of nitrogen- and boron-doped graphene with sublattice asymmetry of doping. Analysis of the influence of impurities on the electronic properties of graphene. iii) Preparation of graphene interfaces with rare-earth (RE) elements on ferromagnetic substrates and investigation of the interplay between electronic states of graphene, RE layer and ferromagnet. iv) Synthesis of pristine and impurity-doped graphene nanoribbons (GNR) and precise characterization of their structural and electronic properties. Metallization by intercalation with alkali metals and investigation of the resulting exotic low-dimensional electronic properties.
