Since 2003, the Egyptian-German joint mission "The Asyut Project" has been conducting archaeological fieldwork on Gebel Asyut al-gharbi in the necropolis of the ancient town of Asyut in Middle Egypt. One of the tombs examined, Tomb III, respectively Nl2.l, belonged to the nomarch lti-ibi, who governed the city around 2040 BCE. His tomb ranked among the largest in Egypt during the First lntermediate Period and was repeatedly reused and plundered. In addition, it was used as a base camp by the early excavators at thebeginning of the twentieth century.Despite or precisely because of this eventful history, the tomb yielded numerous finds dating from the First lntermediate Period to early modern times, some of which are presented in this volume: amulets, glass, molluscs, pottery offering trays, ushebtis, wooden models, as well as a bone inscribed with a Coptic magical text. These object groups give systematical insight into the regional characteristics of the material culture of Ancient Asyut.
