Parvovirus B19 (B19) is a causative agent of erythema infectiosum. The disease is prevalent almost every 5 years. B19 infection has been known to have wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. We examined the association of B19 strains of a paticular genotype with prevalence and biological characterisrics. A genome type of the viral DNA was analyzed by digesting with restriction enzymes and assigned to 4 types according to cutting patterns. Thirty B19 strains found by dot bolt hybridization and PCR were analyzed. All the strain was from the sera obtained at the time when erythema infectiosum was prevalent. The types of B19 strains isolated from 1981 to 1982 were IV,the cutting patterns of those from 1986 to 1987 were II,the types of those from 1989 to 1990 were II and I,and the types of those from 1991 to 1992 were I,indicating a correlation between the genome type and prevalence. On the other hand any clinical manifestations from asymtomatic to bone marrow failure or disturbance of consciousenss were not associated with particular genome types in this study, suggesting that those are modified by host factors.
