The synthesis, characterization, and application of novel functional polymers, oligomers and model compounds is a central research area of the profile field Polymer and Colloid Research at the University of Bayreuth as well as of the SFB 840 and SFB 1357. In this context, precise knowledge of the chemical structure of these materials, including molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and often the chemical structure of the end groups, is indispensable for fundamental investigations. For the characterization of molecular weight, we currently have only gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as an established method. For MALDI-MS analyses we used a MALDI-ToF spectrometer Bruker Reflex III™ in the past. This spectrometer was purchased in 2001. During the last years, the instrument had several defects and therefore was hardly usable. Since there is no spare part supply and no more service from the manufacturer, a replacement of the old spectrometer is indispensable. For the research projects mentioned in this proposal, a MALDI-ToF spectrometer is indispensable in the field of chemistry.
