平成8年度の本研究課題は、「沖縄の歴史情報」の中でも主に「朝鮮と対馬」に関係する歴史情報を取り出すことであった。研究分担者の長節子は、中世の琉朝対外関係史を研究対象とし、特に「偽琉球使の朝鮮渡航」の問題を取り扱った。また「都城島津家所蔵琉球国王宛朝鮮国王書翰」の調査・研究に着手し、書誌学的な調査とその伝来経緯を精査した。またもう一人の研究分担者である平木実は、琉朝間の対外貿易と『朝鮮王朝実録』のデジタル情報研究に従事した。まず『朝鮮王朝実録』CD-ROM版を活用しながら琉球に関する検索を実行し、そこに記載されてある関係記事を検討しながら、本重点領域研究でのコンピュータを活用した歴史研究の在り方を具体的に模索した。次に琉朝の2国間貿易に関する研究を推進した。研究代表者である松原孝俊は、昨年度に引き続き「韓国に残る沖縄関係史料情報」の収集に努め、『燕行録』『文献備考』など十数種の文献からの関係記事を抜き出して、その資料集を報告書にまとめると共に、それを松原のホームページ(http://matsu.rc.kyushu-u.ac.jp/home)にて公開した。そして松原は、本重点領域研究の他の研究班のメンバー5名(佐伯弘次・豊見山和行・木部和昭・池内敏・真栄平房昭)らと共に「東アジアの漂流・漂着」研究の重要性を鑑み、その研究プロジェクトを個人的に組織し、その研究を推進した。佐伯は日韓に点在して残る「対馬宗家文庫の漂流関係史料」を網羅的に整理し、その目録化を図った。豊見山と松原は、石垣島に残る「憲章姓家譜」を見出して、その翻刻を行うと共に、石垣島で発生した中国人と朝鮮人漂着事件を分析した。木部と松原は、『朝鮮物語』(松原新右衛門)の翻刻と解題執筆を進めながら、東アジアにおける情報(風聞)伝達・収集の諸問題を取り扱った。池内と松原は、宗家文庫の漂流関係文書(韓国国史編纂委員会所蔵ほか)の分析とそのデータベース化に努めた。
