多賀-18世紀においてもフランスでは、いまだ自国の文学を固有の伝統を持つ一つの集合体として見る考え方は一般的ではなかった。いわば「フランス文学史」という観念はいまだ一般的には成立していなかったのであり、古代ギリシア・ローマの古典とそれに対するヨーロッパ近代の古典という図式のほうが支配的であった。ところが、史上初めて「フランス文学史」と名乗った文献は17世紀にまでさかのぼる。エリート的学問層の集団であり、批評術的歴史研究の中心であったベネディクト派修道会によって編纂が開始されたフランス文学史がそれである。ただしここには、文学史をさまざまな美的価値が連続的に現れては消える過程と見なす考え方はない。彼らにとって文学史とは、フランス語で書かれた文書のうち詩・小説・歴史・思想などの領域に属するものすべてが形成する集合体のことであった。中川-18世紀のフランス社会において、ギリシア・ラテンの古典はいったいどのような役割を果たしたであろうか。ディドロ・ダランペール編『百科全書』、パンクーク編『百科全書補遺』の初校目の分析を通して、次のようにこの問題の解明を行った。古代から18世紀にいたるヨーロッパにおいて生み出されたさまざまな著作のうち、「古典的」という修飾語を冠するに足りるものはどれであるかについての合意が成立したのは、18世紀半ばであった。他方、18世紀のフランス社会は、ギリシア・ラテンの古典を同時代的状況に適用する試みを多数生み出すことにも成功していた。たとえば、プラトンの『ソクラテスの弁明』は、ヴォルテール、ルソー、ディドロの3人によって、当時の状況に適応するような形で、独自の仕方で読み直され、解釈された。こうして、18世紀フランス社会は、古典を媒介とすることによって、ヨーロッパ文明の連続性を継承しつつ、しかも同時に自己革新をはかることに成功した特異な世紀であった。
