The Trend of Multinucleation and the Characteristics of Suburban Nucleation in Japan

This report aims to examine the trends of multinucleation in large metropolitan areas and to investigate the signs of spatial transformation for the next stage of suburbanization in other small metropolitan areas.As a result of the analysis, first, it was shown that the changes in the suburban areas were stronger than the in central cities and that the characteristics in the suburban areas had changed greatly over 20 years or more. Secondly, it was shown that in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Osaka metropolitan area out of four large metropolitan areas, multinucleation had progressed in both inner and outer suburbs. In the Nagoya metropolitan area it had progressed in the inner suburbs, but in the Fukuoka metropolitan area, signs of multinucleation had not occured.Moreover, as a result of the comparison of characteristics in two suburban nucleations (Suita Esaka district, Senri Chuo district) with that in CBD in the northern suburbs of the Osaka metropolitan area, the difference of functions among these district is small except for conditions concerning scale and spatial position (central or not central ) in the metropolitan area.
