表学の多分野にわたって, 近年とくにその発展が目ざましい組合せ論的な手法を低次元トポロジー(とくに3次元多様体)の結び目, 絡み目に関する研究を, 時間のゆるす限り多くの若手の研究者達との交流を主体として活発な討論をしながら研究した. このために時にはコンピューターによる実験と, その結果を見ての予想段階の議論の場も多くあった.一方, 代表幾何と組合せ理論との関連においては分担者井上を軸として, 非代表的曲面の構成とその実例を得るべく努力した.小池は, Yaung-diagramを用いて, 対称群のみならず, 一般線型群, 直交群, 斜交群およびこれらに附随するWeyl群やCoxeter群の所謂古典群の表現論との関りを明らかにした. 例えばLittle woodの公式に完全な証明を与えたものも一つの成果である.古典群の有限次既約表現とYoung-図形の関係, 手順序集合と組合せ論との関り合い, マルコフ過程に関する末解決問題の組合せ論的なアプローチの方法等, 多くの興味深い課題を得た一年である.

In recent years, there have been many developments in the field of surface science, such as the combination of research methods, low-dimensional structure (three-dimensional multi-body), the combination of research methods, and the study of network technology.
