本総合研究(B)は、同名の重点領域研究「高度技術社会のパースペクティブ」の計画、準備を進めるために企画されたものである。1989年度より発足する重点領域研究への申請は不採択となったが、当初の研究分担者間の討議の結果、引続き1990年度より発足予定の重点領域研究についても同趣旨の研究計画を提出することとし、今年度は、その計画をより精密なものとするための討議、および準備を行うこととした。その討議のため、7回の研究集会を行ったほか、随時討議を行い、またそれぞれの研究分担者において研究準備を進めた。討議の結果、21世紀高度技術社会を展望するに当って、各方面に亘る研究を統一的な視点から統合し、体系化するための中心的な課題を設定する必要性についての認識に到達し、その課題を「資源・環境問題の長期的解決をもたらすような新しい技術文明の構想」とすることとした。科学技術の生み出した近代技術文明は、人類の生活、文明、文化を飛躍的に向上させたが、他面、自然資源の浪費、環境の破壊をもたらし、「成長の限界」に近づきつつある。最近発展しつつある新しいタイプの技術、いわゆる先端科学技術は、このような「成長の限界」を打破して、人類全体の生活を向上させる可能性をふくんでいると期待される。しかし、21世紀において自然資源の枯渇や、地球環境の破壊をもたらすことなく、現在みられるような大きい格差を解消して、すべての人々が満足できる生活を営むことができるようになるためには、単なる生産力の向上だけでなく、社会組織、生活様式、そして人々の意識や価値観にも及ぶ、文明のあり方の転換がなされねばらない。勿論その具体的な形や方向づけについては、まだ明確にはされなかったし、また当然そこには多くの見解の相違があった。しかしその解明を基本課題として背景におきつつ、それぞれの研究分野、関心領域についての研究を進めることとした。
