Studies on demyelinating disease in the Eastern Europeans

This project was based on the result of our previous survey over a 25-year period, which had clarified that, as opposed to the demyelinating disease with disseminated plaques of the cerebrum, optic nerve and spinal cord frequently observed in the autopsy cases in the U.S.A.and Western European countries, the optic nerve and spinal cord are selectively and severely damaged in the Japanese and Chinese cases, and a typical histology of concentric sclerosis (Balo disease) is observed only in the Chinese ones.Based on the finding, we scrutinized cases with demyelinating disease autopsied in some main universities and hospitals in certain Eastern European countries such as Hungary, Poland, Czecho and Romania.In Hungary, we visited Szekesfehervar, Kaposvar, Med.Univ.Pecs, Med.Univ.Buda., Nat.lnst.f.N.& Mental D., Miskolc Hospital, Med.Univ.Debrecen, and investigated 145 autopsy cases in total. At least in five cases, disseminated demyelinating plaques of the Western type and the histology of concentric sclerosis-like lesions coexisited.In Poland, we visited four institutes such as Polish Acad. Science, Warsaw Sch.of Med., Nat.Inst.of Psych.&Nervous disease, Poznan Sch.of Med., and observed 40 autopsy cases. There were also a few cases in which disseminated plaques and concentric sclerosis-like lesions were simultaneously observed.Specimens of the above-mentioned cases are still under examination, and the final result will be reported later. However, it has so far become evident that there is a group of the demyelinating disease in which the histology of the Chinese type of concentric sclerosis coexists with that of the Western type of multiple sclerosis in the cases of Eastern European countries where the Chinese and Europeans were racially mixed.On a global scale, the lesional pattern of the disease seems to be formed in very close relation to genes.
