本研究の最終的な目標は、図書館情報学の従来の研究成果を踏まえて、レファレンス・トゥールのハイパーメディア化を実現する理論的な基礎を確立することである。本年度は、関連文献の探索、既存のハイパーメディアの評価、図鑑のハイパーメディア化の実験という三つのステージで研究を行った。第1に、レファレンス・トゥールのハイパーメディアに関する文献を、おもに図書館情報学関連の専門雑誌を対象にして探索、収集した。ハイパーメディアに関する一般的な文献は、国内外で多数に発表されているが、レファレンス・トゥールのハイパーメディア化を主題とした研究的な内容を持つ文献は少なく、まだこの分野の研究は初期段階にあることが判明した。第2に、既存のハイパーメディア化したレファレンス・トゥールを実際に使用し、図書館情報学の立場からどこに問題があるのかを検討した。出版社やソフトウェアハウスがCD-ROM形態に商品化したレファレンス・トゥールは少なくないが、情報間のリンク付けにいくつかの問題があることが明らかとなった。また、インターネット上に構築されるハイパーメディアの標準形式であるWWWを検討し、レファレンス・トゥールのハイパーメディア化の手法としてWWWが有効であることを確認した。第3に、植物図鑑を具体的な素材として、パソコン上でハイパーメディア化を実現し、その評価実験を行った。まず、植物図鑑のレファレンス・トゥールとしての特徴を分析し、ハイパーメディア化によってどのような検索機能を実現すれば、いっそう効果的、効率的な検索が可能になるのかを検討した。つぎに、静止画像情報はイメージスキャナから、テキスト情報はキーボードからの入力により、植物図鑑のデータを部分的に蓄積した。最後に、このデータを使って、パソコン上で植物図鑑のハイパーメディア化ソフトウェアのプロトタイプを開発し、これを評価した。
