従業者の空間的不均等分布にまず大きな関心が寄せられ事業所サービス業研究では,1980年代にみられた事業所サービス業の再配置と新たな空間的集中・分散パターンが,近年のビジネス環境の変化との関係において論じられた。この研究によって明らかにされた空間的不均等分布は,サービス経済化にともなう地域的不均衡発展への関心を高め,周辺地域における事業所サービス企業の生産性が低い状況を解明する試みが多くみられた。また,都市地理学においては,主として事業所サービス業の立地からみた都市システムの解明に力が注がれ,従来の階層構造の再検討が行われた。ダイナミックな事業所サービス業の立地変動は大都市圏において顕著であるため,都市内部地域あるいは大都市圏内を対象とした実証研究もみられた。さらに,今日の事業所サービス業の成長の背景には,フレキシブルな生産システムの卓越やこれにともなう企業の組織再編成があり,この変化は,業種間,企業間,あるいは空間によって大きなバリエーションが認められた。一方,福岡市における試験的研究の結果,大都市圏における事業所サービス業の立地変動は,1980年代以降わが国においても顕著に見られ,福岡市においても都心部再集中,郊外分散の両者が確認された。いずれのパターンもビジネス環境の変化に伴う立地選好の変化といえが,このような立地変動の要因には情報化による部分を過大評価すべきではなく,情報化が立地変動を起こしているというよりも,オフィスをとりまく社会・経済・政治的要因が従来の立地性向を変化せしめ,その立地変動を情報化が可能にしていると考えるのが妥当である。広域中心都市として類似する広島市における立地動向の比較調査によっても同様の結果が得られた。
