Alveyと丹治は、月に一度の割合でGlasgow Edition of the Works and Correspondence of Adam Smith、スコットランド啓蒙主義の第一次資料、二次資料を中心に、Adam Smithの宗教とレトリック観について歴史主義的な観点から討議を重ねた。Alveyは、6月に、Ashgate社からAdam Smith : Optimist or Pessimist?を出版。また、Smithの歴史論における弁証法的な対立に関する論文をHistory of the Human Sciencesに発表。8月にはヘーゲル的な歴史の終末論という広いコンテクストの中でSmithの宗教観を考察した論文をLanguage, Information, Text (東京大学言語情報科学専攻紀要)に発表。また、Smith自身が政治学的立場から評価していたグローバリゼーションというコンテクストにおいてSmithの宗教観を論じ2本の論文を纏めた(一つは中国語に訳され台湾のSocietasに掲載され、もう一つはInternational Journal of Social Economicsに掲載が決まっている)。2004年1月にはSmithの宗教観に対する歴史的コンテクストの重要性についての論文をLanguage, Information, Textに提出。さらに、Smithの目的論についての論文(Markets and Morality)、およびSmithの進学に関する論文(European Journal of History of Economic Thought)が現在審査中である。その他、9月にオーストラリアのグリフィス大学で、10月にはICUで、11月には京都大学で、12月には慶応大学で口頭発表を行った。来年度は日本アダム・スミス協会のゲスト・スピーカーとして招待講演をすることになっている。丹治は、現在『英語青年』に連載中の「『モロー博士の島』と生体解剖論争」の一部で、18世紀後半から19世紀にかけての(科学との関連で)宗教観を扱った。また、9月に講談社から出版された『批評理論』で、一部レトリックの問題を扱った。それらの論考にはAlveyとの討議が反映されている。
