本研究は、生物遺伝資源および伝統的知識に関わるガバナンスを確立するための要件を探ることを目的としていた。その基本作業として、生物遺伝資源の利用と利益配分に関する国際法制度および国内法制度の現状把握を行った。また、伝統的知識をめぐる世界各国における動向についても、資料収集を行った。それらの資料に基づき、この分野の研究者に聞き取り調査を行うとともに、関連研究会合に出席し、論議を深めた。特に、パプアニューギニアがこの分野の法令整備を進めている関係で、研究分担者は、同国政府の検討委員会において法的観点からアドバイスを行った。また、本研究の経費以外によっても同種:の研究を進めた。たとえば、2002年12月に世界知的財産権機関によって開催された「知的財産権と、遺伝資源、伝統的知識および民俗との関係に関する政府間会合」に研究分担者が国連大学より参加を要請され、伝統的知識に影響を及ぼす知的財産権政策のあり方について国連大学が行う先住民と知的財産権プロジェクト「地球共同体への提言」に関する報告を行い、論議を深めた。この点については、研究代表者との論議も踏まえて、研究分担者は、その後も研究を続け、国連大学高等研究所の政策報告書シリーズの中の一冊として、「伝統的知識の保護において登録制度の果たす役割」(報告書は英文)というテーマの論文が2003年12月に出版された。2004年1月にハノイで開かれたバイオテクノロジーと貿易に関する国際会議においては、本研究の成果の一部を報告するとともに、会議の運営にも当たった。また、主要環境条約および主要国際機関によって運営されているミレニアム・エコシステム・アセスメントのうち、生物多様性に関する主要対策のセクションについて、研究代表者と研究分担者との共同作業によって報告書原案を提出し、国際編集委員会との調整に基づき、随時改訂作業を続けた。なお、国内レベルでも、関連省庁、産業界および関連研究者への聞き取り調査などを行った。特に、日本の伝統技能と知識の保護とその伝承プロセスについては、染め物や織物技術を中心に、宮城県や関西地域で実地調査を行った。研究成果は、上記国連大学報告書などの印刷物のほか、インターネットメディアを通じて公表した。
