Genome sequencing projects and the development of DNA array techniques have recently provided new tools that render a more comprehensive picture of the gene expression underlying the disease's state. We used oligonucleotide array-based technologies for the analysis of colon cancer. In addition, we report the analysis of mucosal gene expression in UC. Ten colonic tissue samples (7 UC and 3 control samples) were subjected to high-density oligonucleotide array analysis. 25 genes had a 3.0〜23.4-fold higher mRNA expression in UC samples compared with normal samples. Two genes showing more than a10-fold increase expression in UC samples were a macrophage metalloelastase and a osteopontin. It has been said that osteopontin important role in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In conclusion, our present study indicates the possibility that osteopontin plays an important role in the pathogenesis of UC via increased immune activity.
