本研究は阪神・淡路大震災の被災地域に関するデータの収集を行い、震災以降の都市変容の状況を定量的に捉えている。まず1995年・2000年国勢調査の小地域統計、1993年・1998年・2003年住宅統計調査といった統計関係と、建築学会・都市計画学会が合同で行った被災地の建物被害調査の被害度の町目集計、さらに1995年4月時点の航空写真および2000年10月時点の被災地写真のデジタル化といった被害度関係、さらにその後の仮設住宅建設時期と立地場所・戸数、復興住宅建設場所と立地場所・戸数について情報を収集し、これらデータについて地理情報システムを利用して重ね合わせ、位置情報と共にデータベースを作成した。このデータベースを用いて、数値データの変化が都市変容に与える影響を分析した。さらに、1995年〜2003年に発表された都市計画に関係する各学会の論文を収集し、時系列で整理すると共に、調査データや結果データが地理的条件によって規定されているものを抽出し、GIS上にてリンクを張る作業を行い、上記同様にデータベース構築を行った。ここからは学際的な視点から見た都市変容のあり方を分析した。また被災市町村が所有している震災時の調査資料や統計データの保存状況について調査により現状把握を行った。研究の成果によりこの10年の被災地の変化を定量的に見ることができるだけでなく、「すまい」問題に対する論点の移り変わりと行政プログラムの関係から、双方の構造的なつながりを明らかにすることができた。
