今年度は、研究計画にあげたポストコロニアル文学の教科書(『ポストコロニアル文学の現在』2004年5月に出版予定)の執筆に必要な資料収集、インタビュー、フィールド・ワークのため、8月に2週間ほど海外調査をニュージーランド、オーストラリア、サモア、フィジーにおいて行った。主な資料収集先は、クウィーンズランド大学、オタゴ大学、ワイカト大学、南太平洋大学。フィジーの南太平洋大学では、文化人類学者であり小説家でもあるエペリ・ハウオファにインタビューを行った。サモア、フィジーにおいては、先住民文学が初等・中等教育において、どのように扱われているか、初等・中等教育機関における英語教育とフィジー語、サモア語など現地語の教育のあり方について、3箇所の学校を訪問し、授業観察、語学担当教師と面会して教材やカリキュラムなどについて調査した。この調査は、今年度の計画書にはなかったが、ポストコロニアルの作家たちがどのような文化的土壌の中で創作を行うかを考察するために必要と思われたので今年度に実施した。国内においては、オーストラリア入植期のマイクロソフト資料のうち第2巻を購入し、オーストラリアや南太平洋諸国と大英帝国との関係について、現在資料を読み込みつつある。この研究成果は、さらに継続的な研究が必要なので、今年度は具体的な形にはならなかった。また、今年出版した論文('Papalagi Moses' and'Snow-White Angels'ウェンツのサモア-キリスト教原理主義・人種・移民-)は、サモア出身でニュージーランド在住の作家アルバート・ウェンツの複数の作品を副題にあるような観点から論じたものである。ウェンツのインタビューは、先方の都合により今年度に行えなかったが、新作について、来年度以降、インタビューを計画したい。マイクロフィルム資料と雑誌バックナンバーの購入のため、予算に余裕がなく国内の資料収集出張は見送った。ワイカト大学マオリ語通信教育の受講も許可されたが、こちらも補助金執行枠にはおさまらなかった。マオリ語の習得に関しては、来年度在外研究中の課題としたい。
