本年度は前年度までの研究の総まとめとして、古事記および日本書紀を比較・対照したうえで、上代散文における物語の構造解析とその展相を見定めることを目的として研究を行った。その研究の成果として、「日本書記の「昔」「古」(『文学史研究』47)および「日本書記の冒頭表現」(『萬葉語文研究』3)を発表した。前者では、作品のなかにある「昔」「古」の様相を整理し、その在りようを論じた。同じく地の文において「昔」あるいは「古」とあっても、その用法は大きく、物語の外から、物語そのものを概括的に示すものと、物語のなかで出来事の配列が交錯するときにその順序を示すような、物語の中でのものとに分かれる。以上のような「古」「昔」の在りようは時間表現の乱用ではなく、漢籍に学びかつそれを的確に使いこなす、上代における表現の豊かさとしてあることを指摘した。後者では、第一段正文および一書を総体的に捉え、とくに正文が前半と後半とに分かれること、そしてその前半から後半へと繋がる文脈がいかにあるかを論じた。特に、前半が「古」から始まり、それを承けて後半が「故日」とあることの意味を考察した。そして「古」は、後半以降の生成説としての内容からみた、いつともしれぬ太古の時間を絶対化して示すものとして理解される。原初の時間を示すことで日本書記は始まる。あるいは、そのような時間を示さねば作品そのものを切り開くことはできなかったと考えられる。以上の研究により、従来の作品論的研究とはまた別な観点から作品の構造的な差異を明確にすることが可能となった。ここに、物語論的研究は従来の作品論の新たなる展開として、その局面を提示するものとして位置づけられる。
