研究代表者は本研究をスタートさせる以前に、ハノイ市で荷物運び労働に従事する女性出稼ぎ労働者の就業行動に関した論文を執筆している。本研究ではハノイ農業大学の農村開発室の協力を得て、荷物運び労働者を多く輩出しているフンイェン省の農村において出稼ぎ世帯および出稼ぎ労働者を対象とした質問紙調査を実施した。主な目的は(1)出稼ぎ労働者を送り出す農村の社会経済状況を明らかにし、(2)出稼ぎ行動については仕事の獲得方法に焦点をあて、その類型化と特徴を明らかにすることとした。そのために、出稼ぎ労働者が農村において情報を収集する際に用いるパーソナルなネットワークを抽出し、ネットワークの大きさや密度と収入の関係の分析を行った。分析枠組みとして、グラノヴェターの「弱い紐帯の強さ」を用いた。分析の結果、出稼ぎ労働者の多くが農村内で頻繁に会う人から出稼ぎ情報を得ている傾向が明らかになった。同時に、稀にしか会わない人を通じて情報を得ている人もおり、こうしたタイプの人々の収入は、頻繁に会っている人から情報を得ているタイプの人の収入よりも高く、統計的にも有意な差がみられた。このようなより収入の高い=満足度の高い仕事を探すために自分の交際範囲では手に入らないような情報や機会に接近しようとしている人々の出現が、いわゆるゲマインシャフト的な農村社会に与えるインパクトについては今後の課題としたが、今後予想される市場経済化の進展に農村社会がさらされることによって、農民がもつネットワークの構造が変化する可能性が高いことが予想された。研究の結果は、2007年11月にマレーシアで行われたASPSで報告され、また2007年度の東北大学大学院文学研究科のCOE「社会階層と不平等研究教育拠点」のAnnual Reportに掲載された。
