本研究では、R.L. Gregoryの「心のデザイン」モデルを援用し、人間情報処理の主要な3つのストリームに由来するクオリア、アウェアネス、知覚ルールを次元的にクロスさせて、体系的に視覚芸術の基底をなす共通項とその心理・脳科学的基盤を明らかにする世界に類がない試みを行った。その結果、心理・脳科学的には、視覚美の様相は多数存在し、それぞれが機能的に特殊化した脳内のモジュール活動に結びついており、本研究で示した分類法の妥当性とともに、美を感受するモジュールやストリームの多重性が明らかにされた。
