本研究の目的は、地球環境の変化が人間の安全保障に及ぼす影響についての調査である。第一に、干ばつが紛争に及ぼす影響に焦点を当て、アフリカにおける干ばつの政治的暴力に対する影響を調査した。アフリカの干ばつは、その多くの国々が天水農業に依存していることから、大幅な収入減少の原因となっている。今回の研究で、主に3つの人為的な気候変動要因が人間と国際間の安全を脅かしていることがわかった。すなわち、資源の枯渇、自然災害、および人間の移動である。本研究分担者は、この研究成果をアメリカ国際政治学会(ISA)年次総会にて発表し、現在「気候変動と安全保障」という題名の書籍の原稿を執筆中である。書籍ではまた気候変動を緩和するためによく計画された政策がいかに予期せぬ反対の結果を招いているかについても検証している。つまり、広域に渡る耕作地および森林地帯が太陽エネルギー、風力、バイオ燃料などの再生可能エネルギーの広域利用により併合されてしまうことで、全世界的な農業生産量を落ち込ませ、発展途上の経済社会にある最低限のサブシステンスレベルで生活する貧しい人々が購入できないほどの食物の価格上昇を招いているのである。この他、当フェローシップ中に、主にアジア地域で将来増加する熱帯低気圧への気候変動の影響に関する研究も開始した。本研究分担者はこれに関して、各種国際会議で発表するとともに、識者を招聘した日本での発表会などを主催した。この研究は、本研究分担者が既に行っている、ハイチにおける自然災害の長期的開発への影響に関する研究とも関連している。また、国連大学高等研究所のポスト・ドクトラル・フェロー二名と共同で、森林経営と気候変動に関する国連大学政策リポート中の一章を出版し、また2008年ポーランド・ポズナンで開催された気候会議でのあるサイド・イベントにて発表した。

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of environmental changes on human safety and security. The first is to investigate the impact of conflict and political violence. The book is ready for action, planning, and policy. The agricultural production of the whole world has been declining, and the development of the economy has been developing. The minimum standard of living for poor people has been increasing. The food price has been increasing. The study on the influence of low temperature and weather conditions on the future development of the gas turbine has begun. The authors of this study were invited to participate in international conferences and meetings, and invited to participate in international conferences and meetings. This study is related to the study of the long-term effects of natural disasters on the development of natural disasters. A chapter of the Policy Review of the Institute for Advanced Studies of Kunien University was published in 2008.
