表面に出ている未結合の手のことをダングリングボンドと称する。相手表面と即座に結合するので、摩擦はこの結合を引き千切りながら進行することとなる。すなわち、ダングリングボンドは摩擦の起源となる。電子スピン共鳴(ESR)を用いてダングリンボンドと摩擦力、凝着力との高い相関を明らかにするとともに、高配向熱分解グラファイト表面におけるダングリングボンドの数を計測する手法を開発し、真空中では1×10^5/mm^2、大気中では6×10^4/mm^2 であることを世界で初めて明らかにした。
