Lavater tried to give the physiognomy which had not been a science the status of science. Surveying his physiognomy and its reception history, I came to the following conclusions. 1) The so-called objectivity of observation and the transparency of observer is an invention of modernity. 2) Because the physiognomist himself unconsciously privileged as an objective observers and the technology is developed for this purpose, the face of the "other"(Levinas) remains to be hidden.

拉瓦特试图赋予非科学的面相学以科学的地位。考察了他的面相及其接受史，我得出了以下结论。1)所谓观察的客观性和观察者的透明性是现代性的发明。2)因为面相学家自己无意识地享有作为客观观察者的特权，而且技术是为此目的而发展的，所以“他者”（列维纳斯）的面孔仍然是隐藏的。
