本研究は社寺建築の設計と深く関連する木割大系の基礎となる屋根材である垂木の規則的な間隔(枝割)について検討したものである。枝割は柱径や柱間・柱高に関連し、古建築の意匠に深く関連する。特に、枝割と軒を支える組物との関連が重要で、近世には三斗組に垂木を6本のせるシステムが主流を占める。しかし、これに従わないシステムを持つものがかなり存在する。この点について重文指定の遺構を通じて考察したものである。
