広く終脳皮質内に分裂能を持つ細胞が散在し、それらがNG2と言うマーカーを持つことはすでに報告されている。この細胞は皮質ニューロンに接して存在することから、いわゆるサテライトグリアの一部と考えられる。新生したNG2細胞がその後どのように変化して、神経系の各細胞(ニューロン、マクログリア)になるのかを、マーカーを用いた組織化学的検索をおこない、サテライトグリアの一部が神経系の幹前駆細胞である確証を得た。研究過程で、細胞種や分化度を分類するマーカーの定義の「ゆらぎ」を修正するための検討もおこなった。
