本研究は、近代中国における科学技術の知識に対する西欧・日本の影響を探ることによって、日中間での知的交流をとおしてつくられたと考えられる中国語の「科学」概念やアイデア、規範の移動のプロセスを証明することを目的としている。西洋と日本の科学技術や方法論を古来の中国文化システムのなかへ効果的に導入する際、自然科学に関する概念がその鍵となるであろうという仮説をたてて研究を進めた結果、そのことがある程度証明された。大きな成果としては、翻訳という知的活動についての個別データの収集を進めることができたことがあげられる。関連書籍や中国と日本の自然科学史や言語史の参考資料を購入し、これらを詳細に調査することができた。近代初期における西洋の自然科学について、中国語翻訳を含む言語資料集を構築するためのこれら基礎資料は、ことばが翻訳され、導入、伝達される当時の状況の全体像が映しだされるような、科学技術用語を広く含むものであり、デジタル化されたデーターベースについても調査を行った。これら研究の成果を以下の3つの国際的な研究集会で報告した。(1)2011年10月にフランス、リヨンのEcole Normale Superieure de Lyonで開催された「東大フォーラム」において、"Modern expressions and concepts in the scientific modernization of China"と題する発表を行った。(2)2012年2月に広島で開催された7th International Workshop on Theoretical East Asian Linguisticsにおいて、"A corpus-based study of the development of highly productive morpho-syntactic constructs in genre-specific historical Chinese texts"というテーマの発表を行った。(3)2012年3月にはUniversity of Western Australian, School of Linguisticsから招待され、"Corpora in empirical language and cultural studies"の講演を行った。いずれの集会でも、Ji Mengの報告は好意的な評価を受け、活発な議論を巻き起こした。さらに、本研究を進める過程で編集作業に従事し共編著の、Quantitative Research Methods in Corpus-Based Traslation StudiesをAmsterdam and Philadelphiaが、John Benjamins Publiching Companyから刊行された。この本の中には、共著論文も含めJi Meng著の論文が3本含まれており、彼女がこれまで翻訳テキストを軸とするコーパススタディーで行ってきた研究の集大成といえる。
