東洋の知に基づく和漢薬を対象にすることは、感染予防の面からも西洋医学にはない新たな可能性が期待できる。その和漢薬の一つ桂皮アルデヒド(シナモン)(200~20μM)はインフルエンザウイルス感染後3-4時間の1時間添加した時最大のウイルス増殖抑制作用を示した。またその芳香吸入は感染マウスの生残率を有意に改善した。そこで再度芳香暴露の影響を検討したところ、37℃、1時間芳香暴露で生残ウイルスはおよそ1/10に減少することを見いだした。このことからシナモン芳香暴露はインフルエンザウイルス感染予防に有用かつ新しい方法であることが示唆された。同時にマイタケ抽出液は、マクロファージを刺激し抗インフルエンザウイルス蛋白質(TNF-α)を産生させることを明らかにした。
