本研究の主題は、帝国日本とアジアの植民地・占領地のあいだの移動と、相互の「他者」認識がどのような関係にあるかを明らかにすることにある。2010年度は、日本学術振興会の「優秀若手研究員海外派遣事業」により、韓国・ソウルに滞在して研究を行ったが、これまでは日本側から得られる史料や視点でのみ考察を行ってきた本研究にとって、韓国の史料や先行研究を収集し、参考にする機会を得られたことはとても大きかったと考えている。とくに、本年度は、これまで行ってきた「外地」出身留学生に関わる研究課題を発展させて、日本から植民地朝鮮や満洲へと旅行した女子学生についての史料・先行研究調査を積極的に行った。帝国「内地」-「外地」間の移動は、一方通行ではなく、双方向で行われたものである。私自身が韓国に滞在しながら、一方では、「外地」出身留学生が日本をどう見ていたかを考え、もう一方では、当時の日本人が朝鮮や満洲をいかに見聞きし、体験し、記録・記憶したかを明らかにすることに努めた。とくに、これまで日本で行われてきた移動と「他者」認識に関わる研究は、移動(旅行や留学など)の理論的・構造的側面を重視して論じられてきたと言えるが、韓国で行われている先行研究を参考にしながら、誰が・どこで・何を体験したのかを具体的かつ詳細に明らかにすべく、旅行記や新聞・雑誌、当時のガイドブックや時刻表などの史料の調査・収集を集中的に行った。2010年度中に、学会発表などでその成果の一部を公にしたが、旅行者・引率者(案内者)・旅行内容(移動方法・宿泊施設・観光資源など)それぞれにおいて、帝国日本と朝鮮・満洲との間の、権力関係を含む多様な関係性が下敷きとなっており、事例毎に慎重に紐解いていくべき課題であると言える。
