项目摘要

本課題は、先端的な翻訳理論と文化批評の視野を踏まえ、日本語から中国語への「重訳」を、明治日本と清末中国の翻訳と出版という歴史的なコンテクストの中で生じた一つの翻訳行為として、その歴史的な特性を提示する試みである。翻訳理論の視点から見ると、1890～1910という特定の歴史段階における「重訳」という言語転換法の特徴を明らかにするために検証すべきは、起点言語から仲介言語を経って、終点言語に辿り着く過程のうち、仲介言語の特徴及び、終点言語空間における仲介言語の一つの言語資源としての歴史的な呈し方、という二つのものである。以上の問題設定にもとづき、研究分担者は、清末の翻訳者である呉椿と彼の翻訳作品を研究対象として選定し、彼の訳作の文体を全面的に検討してその特徴を見いだすという方針のもと、研究及び論文の作成にあたった。これまでに発表した論文では、呉椿の白話文の文法的な特色を、田山花袋の言文一致文体との関連性から検討し、また、呉椿の訳作を時系列で検討することで、清末の「白話小説」がいかにして日本語文脈から力を借りて、伝統的な章回小説の枠組みから少しずつ脱出し、独特な文体感覚を形成したかを見ようとしたが、現在修正中の論文「選語法から見る近代日中間翻訳の実相」では、これは、再びテキストの細部に戻って「重訳」の特性をひときわ深く検証することを目指している。なお、研究代表者は分担者の以上の研究をサポートしつつ、明治期の翻訳について、古典訓読との関連から全体的な検討を加え(〔学会発表〕1)、また、キリスト教寓意小説『天路歴程』の翻訳について注釈を完成させた(〔図書〕1)。
